IRET-CNR

The Research Group of IRET-CNR belongs to the Research Institute of Terrestrial Ecosystems (IRET), of the National Research Council (CNR) of Italy. The IRET is a multidisciplinary research institute involved in studying the structure, dynamics and functioning of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, focusing in particular on global change and anthropogenic pressure. The knowledge gained on these environmental topics represents the scientific basis for identifying the most appropriate protective and corrective interventions, and provides support for the bodies entrusted with formulating policies for environmental protection and recovery.

The CNR-IRET’s group section of Pisa is involved in many environmental researches concerning basically soil quality and recovery, waste management and recycling and water depuration. These researches well integrate with the needs to protect, conserve and recover soil and sediments and water ecosystems, in relation to climate changes and water scarcity. Recently, the group is engaged in many environmental projects, concerning basically soil and sediments reclamation, almost all based on the interactions among
soil (or sediments), plants, micro- and macrofauna.

CNR-IRET of Pisa, being part of a vast international network, has access to state-of-the-art facilities, promoting and managing advanced Research & Development projects into the structure and functioning of ecosystems, it provides policy makers with solutions and support on environmental protection and recovery.

In the last years, 3 EU projects were developed on the theme of the reclamation of contaminated sediment.

  • AGRIPORT – Agricultural Reuse of Polluted dredged Sediments No. CO/08/239065/S12.532262.
  • LIFE+CLEANSED 12 ENV/IT/652 – Innovative integrated methodology for the use of decontaminated river sediments in plant nursing and road building.
  • HORTISED LIFE14 ENV/IT/000113 Demonstration of the suitability of dredged remediated sediments for safe and sustainable horticulture production.
